Community EMS Clinician Management of the Long-Term Opioid Use Patient
|

The opioid crisis has touched every corner of our state, and our fragile EMS system has been affected as well. The increasing demands which opioids place on our EMS clinicians, also require that we explore beyond the basics of how we have approached opioid use and response in the past. Brian will bring to light not only the emergent treatment of opioid overdose, but also treatments available for our patients with persistent opioid dependance which Alaska EMS has traditionally not been exposed to. |

When a patient presents with either high or low blood sugar, it can be a complication of diabetes - but not always. How can we know for sure? Let's look into the actual disease of diabetes. We will review the relationship between glucose and insulin, what happens to the body systems as a result, and where the highs and lows of that balance leave our patients. Diabetes is the 9th leading cause of death across the country, and that includes Alaska. As servants to our community, we can do so much more than just offering a ride to the hospital.
