Have you ever had the joy of squishing lemon over a fresh poke bowl or cooked ceviche to get that acidic cooking of your fresh fish? That acid cooks it just right to make it oh so enjoyable. But what if that fish was your organs and that lemon juice was the unregulated hydrogen ion acidosis from your bicarbonate supply tanking. In this interactive case-based course we will go over Sepsis and its stages, pathophysiology and treatments (that seem to change by the minute). We will focus on what EMS’s role is in Sepsis management and also tie in why in the heck is floppy hearts and nitro drips in the title of a sepsis talk.

  • Review and understand the stages and pathophysiology of sepsis with the human body and how to correlate treatment to those signs.
  • Understand the what and why to vital sign changes and how to catch progressing sepsis early with subtle changes to things like end-tidal and heart rate.
  • Understand the role and early goal directed therapy for EMS in the septic patient and how to be a patient advocate for your patient whether they are early or late in the immune response.

Learn about Virginia’s collaborative and innovative effort to address the disparity in recognition of and service for survivors of sexual, domestic, and intimate partner violence impacted by brain injury.

It is estimated that as many as 31,500,000 women in the United States live with a brain injury caused by intimate partner violence, and 21,000,000 of these women have likely sustained multiple brain injuries. Since 2020, BIAV and VDH have been working together to: educate sexual/domestic violence agency (SDVA) support workers about brain injury and its impacts, implement brain injury screening in SDVAs and hospitals, and connect survivors to supports and resources.

Objectives:

-Understand what a brain injury is and how damage to the brain causes specific challenges physically, emotionally, cognitively, and behaviorally

-Review the intersection between brain injury & domestic violence, along with current research and evidence

-Learn about Virginia's Screen & Intervene Project and what is being done to screen for brain injury in the community

-Explore screening results, themes, and what this means for intervention

-Discuss lessons learned by community partners, as well as future directions

-Discover how you can screen for brain injury

This will include the unique opportunity to hear screening data findings collected and analyzed by epidemiologists at VDH including demographics of who has been screened, how many screened positive, and what the most common symptoms of brain injury survivors are struggling with in Virginia. Also hear about the steps that we are taking to continue growing and expanding this effort, including involving other community service workers, first responders, and public servants.

Strangulation, though not always fatal, produces medical signs and symptoms for patients and these non-fatal assaults are especially common in domestic violence situations. This course will cover the basics of strangulation for EMS providers who may be the first responders on scene for domestic violence calls. It’s crucial that providers recognize the sign and symptoms of strangulation that are often minimized or go unnoticed. Many prosecutors are using EMS providers’ reports to assist in pursuing maximum sentences for perpetrators. Our Forensic Nurse will share helpful suggestions for patient assessment and documentation of strangulation related injuries.

Did you know that allowing a patient to use one of their own inhalers during an asthma attack can actually hurt them? Shortness of breath calls are among the most common, and lethal! Most providers are used to using one or two medications as bronchodilators, but emergency respiratory pharmacology can be easily divided into three mechanisms for optimal treatment. Learn which medications correct specific respiratory pathology and which combinations can be deadly if you don’t know about them. This session has useful, practical information for both EMTs and Paramedics.

At the conclusion of this session you will be able to:

  1. List the three most common pathologies occurring during a shortness of breath call
  2. Describe why each of the three classes of respiratory medications is used in prehospital medicine compared to one another
  3. Differentiate between mucolytics, antitussives, and expectorants

Too many people, especially those in our profession are languishing, just moving aimlessly through their days. What is the concept of flourishing? Emergency Medical Services (EMS) continues to rank as one of the most stressful jobs in the United States (Bennett, 2004; Dow, 2019). Vicarious trauma is defined as the emotional residue of exposure to traumatic stories and experiences of others through the healthcare response; witnessing fear, pain, and terror that others have experienced; a pre-occupation with horrific stories told to the professional (American Counseling Association, 2016). This training will address stigma surrounding vicarious trauma, skill building to help support the EMS professional, and how to advocate for systems change.

Learning

Objectives:

1.      Participants will understand the stigma around the impact

of vicarious trauma on the EMS Professional and other healthcare

providers.

2.      Participants will learn activities to do to reduce the

impact of vicarious trauma and resources to access in the community.

3.      Participants will learn how to lead discussions within

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

1.      Relate anatomy and physiology to the pathophysiology of trauma

2.      Utilize anatomy to determine the injury most likely to be lethal to specific trauma patients
