Wednesday Mar 07, 2018 @  09:45:AM  —  04:00:PM MST

Trauma Informed Care: Responding to Trauma in Early Childhood

Exposure to ongoing or repetitive trauma during childhood can interfere with healthy attachment and development and this is often referred to as developmental trauma (Arthur et al., 2013). Developmental trauma is so impactful because it happens while a child is developing, as well as it often occurs within a child’s care-giving system.

This one-day training focuses on the neurobiology and brain development of a child and explores the impact and effects of exposure to ongoing or repetitive trauma in childhood. Practitioners will learn a variety of strategies of how to respond to and support children who may be experiencing trauma.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define and describe trauma-informed practice
  • Identify the main principles of trauma-informed practice
  • Define and describe developmental trauma
  • Articulate the impacts and effects of developmental trauma on children
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of developmental-trauma in children
  • Implement trauma-informed strategies and effective practices when working with children

Session E: Restorative Justice

Wednesday Mar 07, 2018 @  09:45:AM  —  04:00:PM MST

How do we respond meaningfully to harmful or criminal actions? Based on the principles of restorative justice, this workshop offers a framework for answering this question in your own context. The timeless philosophy of restorative justice invites people to look beyond a merely punitive view of justice and discipline. Instead, it focuses on the needs of everyone involved, emphasizing direct accountability, reparation, prevention, dialogue and, in some cases, renewed relationship. If you work in a community, school, government or other organizational setting and make decisions about how to respond to harmful actions, this workshop will provide you with insights for incorporating restorative justice principles into your environment.

*Optional activity. Limited seating! For participants only. Due to limited space and seating, we are unable to accommodate request for guests to attend.

This craft was shared 2 years ago at the Blackfoot Language Symposium hosted by Kainai and it made me think of the story my mom Eva shared about her first doll.

Eva’s story: “My dad would ask my brother to go haul water for the old lady (our gramma) and I always wanted to go, so I followed my brother across the field to our grammas house. He would pick up the pails and walk towards the river bottom, and I would go inside. The old lady always had oven biscuits on the table with sweet tea. My gramma made me a doll out of an old sac, it didn’t have a face, and she always made it fancy dresses.
