CRA Model and Math Language Routines for Secondary Teachers

Cost: $45

Date: Oct 7, 2021

Location: WCU at Biltmore Park, Room #336

Research has shown that when math content is new or difficult, students benefit from explicit instruction. Math language routines support sense making, optimize mathematical discourse and student responses.

Participants will practice using the CRA model of teaching in secondary mathematics. These high impact strategies will include scaffolding/ intervention ideas for struggling students whether in EC, Gen Ed or students on the bubble in MTSS. Using concrete materials, participants will practice in how to develop conceptual understanding of operations with polynomials, factoring, equations, and distributive property. Participants will practice Math Language Routines with activities from secondary math standards to help students move from concrete to representational to abstract. Elsa Iglesias, a Buncombe County EC Instructional Coach has taught all the secondary math courses and has a unique perspective on how to help struggling math students at the high school level.  For more information, contact April at aspencer@wresa.org  828-774-5681 ext. 103

Robert Berry, President of NCTM, states “If the goal in mathematics teaching and learning is to support student success with mathematical proficiency, then we must be explicit about using instructional routines.” In this workshop we will present 8 mathematical language routines and explore how these routines- when used as true routines- will increase math proficiency for all students. These high impact strategies will include scaffolding/ intervention ideas for struggling students whether in EC, Gen Ed or students on the bubble in MTSS. The workshop will use Open Up Math (a completely free online curriculum) materials. This workshop will be taught by Stefanie Hill, Buncombe County’s K-12 math specialist.  For more information, contact April at aspencer@wresa.org 828-774-5681 ext. 103
