Keynote - Engaging High-Res Disaster Imagery
Keynote - Engaging High-Res Disaster Imagery
|
FREE! | ||||
When a natural disaster strikes, lives are affected. Gaining insight into affected areas to increase situational and operational awareness is crucial to response and recovery. The Geospatial Intelligence Center (GIC) was created to help optimize how emergency management and insurers respond to natural disasters by providing high resolution, post-disaster imagery. Through this imagery, the GIC empowers both the public and private sector with new digital capabilities to increase the effectiveness of response and recovery efforts. When a natural disaster occurs, the GIC mobilizes to impacted areas with an aircraft fleet equipped with state-of-the-art digital aerial sensor systems. Within 24-hours of aircrafts landing, ultra-high resolution oblique and nadir imagery is available to emergency management personnel and insurers along with tools to provide immediate insight into the destruction. After deploying to some of the most destructive catastrophic events in US history, the GIC is revolutionizing how emergency managers and insurers analyze and visualize disaster situations with unprecedented access. |

“I haven’t been fully staffed for a decade”, “I am down 62% in staffing”, “We never stop interviewing or hiring, just to keep up with the loss in staffing” Hiring, training, and constant mandatory overtime is taxing our teams. This existential crisis is costing PSAPs extraordinary amounts in finance, emotional exhaustion and over-stressing employees left in the wake of this revolving door. While it seems that being fully staffed could be a thing of the past…there are a few things you can do to find relief. Attend this session and debunk quick fixes, examine the perils of old school hiring practices and take away a couple secret ingredients that can be implemented as quickly as tomorrow. |

83 Days - The Hernando De Soto Bridge Story
83 Days - The Hernando De Soto Bridge Story

Bridge inspectors encounter risk during every inspection to keep the traveling public safe and to help maintain major infrastructure assets. But what happens when both inspectors and the traveling public are in imminent danger? On Tuesday, May 11, 2021, on the Hernando de Soto Bridge, that is the situation in which twenty-three of Michael Baker’s Rope Access and UAS team members found themselves. At 1:50pm, the first day of work, an inspector peered over the bridge deck and discovered the primary tie element holding the structure together had mostly severed. The rope access inspection team was deployed on above-deck portions of the bridge and six lanes of interstate traffic were crossing the bridge, so action needed to be taken immediately. This presentation tells the story of the ensuing evacuation, closure, and following days to ensure the safety of the public, Michael Baker’s inspection team, and the Hernando de Soto bridge. |

On Premises or the Cloud? Addressing trends in Public Safety.

Never before has public safety been awash in information streams and sources as they are today. As public safety looks to leverage the growing amount of data available to inform the decision-making process, discussions regarding where and how data is stored, analyzed, and secured have become increasingly important. In this session we will discuss the impact of cloud services on the public safety ecosystem with a specific focus on the use of GIS data and services. Additionally, we will address how connectivity, reliability, security, and cost concerns can be examined from both on premises and cloud perspectives. ? Takeaways:

Lessons Learned in GIS Map Conversion
Lessons Learned in GIS Map Conversion
|
FREE! | ||||
This presentation focuses on the lessons learned while transitioning our GIS activities from paper maps to an intranet-based GIS system. The focus is on five key areas of concern; GIS software selection, architecting GIS, standards and data management, data types and their sources, and enterprise integration. Comparisons and metrics are provided for each of these areas of concern. For example, under software selection, we identify four categories of software reviewed in our assessment; branded, proprietary, open source, and custom. We then review our grading system, which consists of; cost, time, staffing, and software utilization. Also reviewed is our consideration for integration with other enterprise platforms; SharePoint, SQL Server, SAP, etc. Our final choice was based on strategic goals and stakeholder requirements, but the process and considerations are universal. |

Interoperability matters. NENA's i3 Standard defines how NG9-1-1 breaks down traditional barriers that have prohibited effective, efficient communication and hindered shared situational awareness across jurisdictional lines. GIS is critical to breaking down those barriers, acting as a foundation for i3 to facilitate interoperability. This keynote session will share why standards are so important to NG9-1-1, and how accurate, well-maintained GIS data and interoperability are inseparable. |

A number of states are now requiring incident response plans for schools and other critical infrastructure. There are many approaches to meeting these requirements. All collect information, much of it incomplete or out-of-date, in formats that lack the ability to be analyzed or extended to support a variety of uses. So how does the GIO respond to the creation of these plans? Great value lies in transforming information into geospatial data. Leveraging this data to create actionable outputs - plans, graphics, webmaps and apps - presents an opportunity for GIOs. This presentation will highlight an innovative approach to the collection, correction and communication of information that transcends into the valuable GIS data needed to capitalize on this opportunity. Overcoming the Common Operating Picture Challenge
Overcoming the Common Operating Picture Challenge
|
FREE! | ||||
Emergency situations highlight the critical need for a comprehensive Common Operating Picture (COP). The COP can provide the necessary situational awareness to improve understanding of the incident and facilitate collaborative decision making by telecommunicators and first responders. Not having a powerful COP will hinder the right response to any emergency situation. Accessing important information will allow first responders to be better equipped to deal with a crisis. Comtech’s Steven Craig, ENP will discuss how having information around an emergency using a COP can more effectively prepare first responders in urgent circumstances. Comtech’s long history of providing precise device location, mapping, public safety and messaging solutions makes us an authority in understanding how a COP can benefit ECCs with substantial situational awareness and real-time information. |

New technologies have the potential to revolutionize the way people communicate but widespread adoption of these new technologies, especially by government agencies, can be a slow and difficult process. This problem is worsened by the budget challenges that most State and Local agencies face. At the Industry Council for Emergency Response Technologies (iCERT), our focus is to help our corporate members and the Public Safety community address these critical challenges by increasing awareness of the benefits of new technologies and promoting public policies, including increased funding, that promotes wider adoption of those technologies. This presentation will address how iCERT is driving increased innovation through its advocacy with policymakers and collaboration with the Public Safety industry. |

i-Axis: Indoor Mapping, Tracking, and Navigation Best Practices
|
FREE! | ||||
Since 2019, NAPSG Foundation has partnered with NIST PSCR to explore the best practices for indoor mapping, tracking, and navigation. This information axis, or i-Axis, promises better data and technology for first responders. As a result, Version 1 of the Best Practices Guide to Indoor Mapping, Tracking, and Navigation was released in February 2021. This guide was created to help accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies by public safety professionals and was informed by the Location-Based Services First Responder Working Group, a group of experts made up of representatives from law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, emergency management, the private sector, researchers and academia, and vendors who provide these technologies. Version 2 of the guide will be complete in Q2 of 2022, as will a white paper on ongoing gaps and research priorities. This session will introduce the process of arriving at the Best Practices Guide, ongoing gaps, and provide opportunities for the audience to provide their experiences with indoor operations. |
