This is an all-day visit to an amazing museum featuring operating steam, diesel, and streetcar equipment. With the "Run One" option (extra fare), you can be the engineer and operate a real locomotive! Fare includes transportation and lunch. Comfortable shoes recommended.

Completed in 1939, the Los Angeles Union Station is widely regarded as the “last of the great train stations”. Built in the Mission Moderne style, it is the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States. Fare includes transportation. Lunch is available on your own at the station.

Travel Town features a vast array of historic steam and diesel-electric motive power. Many examples of rolling stock, vehicles, and historic artifacts are on display. While there, we will visit the “East Valley Lines”, a large N scale club layout also on the property. Rail Giants features displays of Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe steam locomotives and more. We will also visit the Fairplex Garden Railroad on this tour. Fare includes transportation and lunch.

This tour will visit the one of the Metro Rail shops that inspects, cleans, and repairs Los Angeles County’s light rail commuter trains. Learn how they keep ‘em on the rails! Then we visit GEMCO Yard. Once a SP yard. Gemco is now operated by the UP. This tour will be hosted by Mike Osborne, a UP Conductor/Brakeman, who worked this yard when it was delivering parts to the GM assembly plant (thus Gemco). He will relate stories of the heyday of this yard, as we watch the Guadalupe Hauler being made up. Fare includes transportation and lunch.

We will be walking on uneven ground, close toed shoes required.

Celebrating 100 years of making movie and television magic, this 2-3 hour guided tram and walking tour will take you through one of the world’s oldest working studios. Fare includes transportation and admission. This is an all day tour. Lunch is available on your own. No one under 5 admitted.

Established in 1917, the San Antonio Winery is the oldest producing winery in Los Angeles. Tour the production area, then enjoy a wine tasting in the tasting room and fresh gourmet Italian fare in the Maddalena Restaurant. The winery also features a unique gift shop. Fare includes transportation. Lunch on your own at the winery.

Academy Museum of Motion Pictures-This is America’s largest institution dedicated to the art and science of moviemaking. With over 13 million objects in its collection, you will see props, costumes, set pieces (think The Godfather) and learn about the fascinating processes that go into creating a film. See an Oscar® close-up! Fare includes transportation and admission. Lunch is on your own at the museum.

Ø Petersen Automotive Museum-With over 100 vehicles on display in 25 galleries, the Petersen Automotive Museum features rare and unique autos from all eras. If cars are your thing, this tour is a must-see. Fare includes transportation and admission. Lunch is on your own at the museum.

"SCRATCHBUILDING A SMALL STYRENE BUILDING” (HO Scale)

Lead Instructor: Jim Gore, MMR^®, assisted by MMRs Peter Youngblood, Clark Kooning, and Carl Smeigh

  In this clinic Jim will take you through the steps of scratchbuilding a small shed (or yard office) out of styrene. This material is easy to work with and you will be shown the basics of working with this material. Jim and the other instructors will also share some tips and tricks in working with versatile material. At the end of the clinic we hope you will have a small building completed or at least well on its way…

SCRATCHBUILDING A SMALL PUDDLE JUMPER BRIDGE (Styrene & Wood)

Lead Instructor: Clark Kooning, MMR^®, assisted by MMRs Jim Gore, Carl Smeigh and Peter Youngblood

Clark and the MWTM team will provide you with the knowledge to build a small bridge with structural elements out of Styrene and wood. You will be shown how to paint or stain wood used for the abutments. In addition, you will learn about applying small details that make this very small bridge come alive. This small bridge can be used in many layout situations.

"IT’S SO EASY WITH CORA FOAM!" (HO Scale only)

Lead Instructor: Peter Youngblood, MMR^®, assisted by MMRs Jim Gore, Carl Smeigh, and Clark Kooning

Cora Foam is polyurethane foam that carves like butter, paints like wood and has countless model railroad applications in all scales. Using this amazing material Peter, assisted by MMRs Jim Gore and Carl Smeigh, will teach you how to build a single track concrete pedestrian underpass, learn how to make bridge abutments, retaining walls, signal pedestals, platforms and much more.

Introduction to Laser Kits

Lead Instructor: Clark Kooning, MMR^® assisted by MMRs Peter Youngblood, and Carl Smeigh.

Clark will take you through the steps of building a Laser Kit for the first time. Laser-cut wood is now used to create an array of precision-cut kits with parts ranging from walls with door and window openings cut ever-so-accurately to extremely fine window mullions. All parts fit perfectly (even in multiple layers), making the resulting structure resemble a scratch-build model. Our project will involve a bunkhouse that could serve as a storage shed on your model railway. 3 MMRs will assist you during your hands-on experience.

Making Realistic Foreground Trees

Lead Instructor: Jim Gore, MMR^® assisted by MMRs Peter Youngblood, Carl Smeigh, and Clark Kooning

Jim will take you through the creation of two foreground trees: one deciduous tree (like cottonwood or oak or elm) and one conifer tree (pine, fir, spruce, or larch). You will learn about simple techniques that help make the tree to look more realistic as a stand-alone scenery item. We will also talk about size, shape and height of the trees.

“MAKING A CREEK SCENE – Part A” (You MUST register for both A & B)

Lead Instructor: Carl Smeigh, MMR®, assisted by MMRs Jim Gore, Peter Youngblood, and Clark Kooning

Carl Smeigh will lead you through the process of building a creek bed, water side details including a rock face and a beach. He will go through pouring the “Water” used in scene. You will learn how to make build a creek bed, add bottom and shore details with the final step of “pouring the water” and adding “motion” to give a realistic water scene. 

Part A will be building the diorama, adding rocks to one side and a beach to the other side of the creek, completing the creek bed, painting or dirtying the creek bed, adding any desired underwater details and pouring the resin for the water.

“MAKING A CREEK SCENE – Part B” (You MUST register for both A & B)

Lead Instructor: Carl Smeigh, MMR®, assisted by MMRs Jim Gore and Peter Youngblood

 Carl Smeigh will lead you through the process of building a creek bed, waterside details including a rock face and a beach. He will go through pouring the “Water” used in scene. You will learn how to make build a creek bed, add bottom and shore details with the final step of “pouring the water” and adding “motion” to give a realistic water scene. 

Part B will finish the diorama after an overnight curing of the resin, adding surface water details detailing the shoreline and the area above the rock wall. Grass, bushes and trees are added to finish the scene.

“BUILDING A 50' FREIGHT CAR BODY TRACKSIDE SHED” (HO Scale only)

In this clinic MMR^® Peter Youngblood, assisted by MMRs Clark Kooning, Jim Gore and Carl Smeigh will guide you through building a generic trackside shed using a provided plastic HO scale 50 ft. box car shell then adding optional concrete steps. Construction methods are applicable to all scales.
