Snow White and Rose Red: A Comparative Tasting of Riesling and Pinot Noir from Shared Terroir

Sommeliers often mention Riesling and Pinot Noir in the same breath when asked about their favorite varieties and in many parts of the wine world, the two grapes are grown more or less side by side. John Haeger will lead a panel of distinguished wine makers from California, Oregon, and Germany's Pfalz and Baden regions through a discussion of shared terroirs, surprising similarities and intractable differences, illustrated by an equal number of Pinots and Rieslings. After the panel, you will have a chance to taste some of the best wines not available to the general public. This also includes a ticket to Night of 100 Rieslings.

After the Gold Rush: A tasting of California's new wave (and Some Delicious Old School) Riesling

Riesling arrived in California with European immigrants in the middle of the 19th century, and grew to become one of the state's most widely planted varieties. The Riesling boom came to an end in the early 1980's, when fruity, off-dry white wines fell out of fashion, and oaky (off-dry) Chardonnays became the dominant style. Since then, Riesling in California has greatly diminished in importance in the public eye, and now is often viewed either as a workhorse component for mass market blends, or as a fringe dry wine pursued by a handful of extremely dedicated producers. This tasting will take a closer look at the producers who have staked claims that California Riesling is much more than a historical footnote; and in fact the state has a bright future as one of the world's great Riesling regions.

New this year, City of Riesling has assembled a collection of tasting tables each curated by a different person to offer a casual way to view Riesling through different lenses.
