DFW Oral Surgeons Study Club Presents Dr. Michael Forde

Rethinking Treatment of the Terminal Dentition

There is a massive disparity in the number of people who require replacement of their dentition due to complete or partial edentulism and the number of people who actually receive treatment each year. Additionally, when these patients receive recommendations for replacement options, they are often not presented with all the available options or options which are known to be inferior to patients.

This course will provide an overview of the problem as it relates to the unmet need of this patient group. Rationale will be provided for how clinicians can change their views on how these patients are typically diagnosed and how that influences treatment planning recommendations.

This course will detail the full range of treatment options available for these patients, will weigh the pros and cons of each and will discuss how best to present that information to patients during consultation.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the growing unmet need which exists for patients who are either edentulous or have terminal dentition
  • Understand how traditional clinical training is a contributing factor to this unmet need growing
  • Become more familiar with the full range of options available to treat this patient group including complete dentures, overdentures and implant retained fixed full arch
  • Feel comfortable presenting these options to patients and matching that with what is really best for that individual
