DFW Oral Surgeons Study Club Presents Dr. Ray Rodriguez

Moderated by Dr. John Shillingburg

Treatment Planning & Problem Solving

Program Summary: Dr. Raymond Rodriguez will present a case on a 69-year-old male who needs to be restored with a lack of posterior occlusal support. Case components include periodontal maintenance, extractions, implant therapy, provisionalization, anterior aesthetics, and conventional crown and bridge- splinted and individual. The learning objectives are centered on the application of clinical knowledge and the development of problem-solving skills through the study of real-world scenarios.

  • Learning Objectives: Applying theoretical knowledge to practical situations: Learners move beyond textbook concepts by analyzing real-world dental cases, simulating the decision-making process of a clinical practitioner.
  • Developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills: The case method challenges learners to analyze complex patient situations, evaluate different treatment options, and defend their proposed solutions.
  • Fostering collaborative learning: As part of study club programs, treatment planning encourages students to work together in groups, building on each other's ideas to solve complex problems. This approach mimics the collaborative nature of clinical practice.
  • Synthesizing different areas of expertise: The program incorporates enhancements such as case samples, which allow learners to explore complex material from various angles and deepen their understanding.
  • Preparing for different clinical situations: By exploring a wide range of case types, learners gain exposure to different problems and decision points, helping them prepare for future clinical challenges.
  • Honing professional judgment: The experience encourages learners to "put themselves in the shoes of the actual decision-makers" by analyzing real challenges and considering different approaches based on the information available at the time.
  • Reflecting on real outcomes: In some case-based teaching, the actual outcome is revealed after students discuss the case, providing an opportunity for reflection and comparison with their own predictions.
