Partnering for Change: Understanding the Structural and Social Determinants of Health to Prevent Problem Gambling

Wednesday, July 16th, from 1:00 PM ET to 3:00 PM ET (Virtual)

The social determinants of health (SDOH) are the biggest drivers of health where people live, work, and play, and they have significant impacts on problem gambling. This virtual training will explore strategies to identify and prioritize SDOH issues, how to collect and use data to inform health equity plans, and how to engage authentically with community partners to facilitate change.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key issues to analyze and address when planning to eliminate health disparities caused by the social determinants of health.
  • Describe the social determinants of health and explore how they can be addressed through problem gambling prevention efforts.
  • Identify methods for collecting and analyzing data on health disparities to inform and prioritize key issues within the community, contributing to a health equity action plan.
  • Identify strategies for building authentic partnerships within the community to facilitate a process of community change.

CEUs

Upon completion of the training and receipt of your evaluation survey, participants of Partnering for Change: Understanding the Structural and Social Determinants of Health to Prevent Problem Gambling can receive a certificate of completion.

The Massachusetts Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling Prevention (MCOEPGP) provides capacity building, training, and resource development services to address the prevention of problem gambling and related health issues such as the prevention of substance misuse, suicide, and violence. The MCOE PGP approach is rooted in public health and utilizes the social-ecological model – incorporating the individual, family, and community – as a framework for its work. This approach is in alignment with evidence-based practices that require authentic community engagement, the use of an explicit equity lens and addressing the economic and social conditions that influence the health of people and communities, known as the social determinants of health.
