This course will provide participants with the working knowledge necessary to establish fundamental principles to be used in determining code compliance of the design and construction of decks.  Plan reviewers, field inspectors, permit techs, and contactors attending this class will receive a wide spectrum of information needed to determine minimum requirements for deck construction. An overview of UPC Chapter 6 will examine basic requirements for potable water distribution systems. Also included will be some hands-on pipe sizing exercises to help solidify pipe sizing concepts. Course will be four (4) hours in duration.

This course is ideal for building inspectors, plans examiners, mechanical contractors, and design professionals involved in the design or oversight of kitchen ventilation systems - and will include real-world examples, diagrams, and scenario-based exercises, to help attendees develop their ability to identify compliant and non-compliant installations and apply code requirements confidently.

To explain key requirements of the 2023 NEC that need to be verified when performing a solar PV plan review (or when designing solar PV systems) and what to look for during a PV inspection.

This seminar will focus on the different types of fire-resistant rated assemblies and systems required by the International Building Code. Resources on identifying different fire stopping and joint systems will be discussed along with the use of dampers and what type of damper is required for different applications. This seminar will also discuss the plan review and inspection of such assemblies and systems. This class is beneficial to design professionals, builders, plans examiners and building and fire inspectors at all levels of experience. Attendees will learn the different code requirements for rated assemblies, and when penetration fire stopping, joint systems and dampers are required and where to find the code requirements as well as resources for these systems. 

This class is a basic overview of the means of egress requirements included in Chapter 10 of the IBC. The presentation will include detailed discussions on the design of the means of egress in buildings. Subjects included in the class are the three parts of the means of egress including occupant loads, egress width, number of exits, travel distance, common path of egress travel and exit enclosures. Practical examples will be used to illustrate code requirements.

This half-day course will provide an in-depth overview of the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) and its application to cannabis oil extraction equipment and systems. Special attention will be given to Articles 500, 501, and 512.

This presentation examines how Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) support healthy indoor air quality (IAQ) in residential buildings by providing consistent, balanced ventilation. It reviews the key code provisions that ensure adequate airflow and pollutant dilution and outlines the types of HRV systems commonly available. Special attention is given to HRV performance in cold climates, where frost control, efficiency, and system sizing directly influence IAQ outcomes.

This half-day course will cover the key requirements governing residential ESS. We cover the requirements of UL 9540 and 9540A, NEC Article 706, IRC 330, and IFC 1207. Topics will include disconnects, OCPDs, location requirements, system sizing, separation requirements, and smoke/heat alarm.

Cannabis Facilities: The 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) specifically addresses plumbing installations in Appendix Q. Several other chapters (6, 7, and 8) also stipulate basic plumbing system requirements. There are also many fire and mechanical code provisions that apply to cannabis operations. All of these will be considered in an eight (8) hour course.  

This application course describes the common problems associated with the plan review process and offers suggestions for improvement by providing plan review and acceptance test checklists, spreadsheets to determine battery and voltage drop calculations, exercises to determine proper spacing of smoke detectors, exercises to determine proper audibility of fire alarm notification appliances and proper sizing and placement of visible notification appliances.

IBC chapter 9 contains requirements for fire sprinklers and fire alarms based on Occupancy groups, use, occupant loads and fire areas. Discussion will include effective use of Chapter 9 and what constitutes a fire area, and the various triggers are for both fire alarms and fire sprinklers. Attendees will learn how to determine when fire sprinklers and fire alarms are required in chapter 9 and elsewhere in the code, and what systems are required.

This session covers the subject of hazardous materials to assist the Building Official in properly dealing with the more dangerous occupancies.  The pertinent sections of the IBC regarding Hazardous Materials will be covered, including each type of H occupancy, as well as additional sections of some other codes. The class covers how to correctly classify materials, correctly determine when a label of “H” occupancy is appropriate, and determines various manners of protection required to reduce risk. Control areas, storage, open and closed systems will all be discussed in depth.
