Brain Injury in the Veteran Community: Myths, Facts, and Support

Time: 1:00pm-2:30pm

Location: Virtual/Online

Instructors: David Kracke, JD and Douglas Gomez, PhD,

University of Oregon Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CBIRT)

CE credits: Unavailable for this course at this time.

Course Description:

Brain injuries are common among veterans, and the more a service provider knows about brain injuries, the better they can serve their clients and patients. All aspects of a veteran's life are affected when they have a brain injury. In this workshop, David Kracke, JD, (Oregon's Brain Injury Advocate) and Doug Gomez, Ph.D, both with the University of Oregon's Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CBIRT), will explore long-held myths about brain injury and explain where we are today in our understanding of brain injury. From meeting medical needs to housing, employment, and social services, participants will learn ways to advance their work with and support for brain injury survivors.

Learning Objectives:

  • · Knowledge about brain injury and how it affects veterans.
  • · Ability to recognize brain injury and know when to screen for brain injury.
  • · Understanding of how and when to use specific accommodations when working with veterans with brain injury.
  • · Knowledge about caregiver experience when a loved one sustains a brain injury.
