Crosshatch Field Schools are hands-on, full-day, on-farm conferences. In addition to workshops with brilliant teachers, the Field Schools will include one-on-one consulting with farm experts, a local food lunch and a post-workshop social networking hour.

TRACK OPTIONS:

Track 1: Advanced Beekeeping with Dr. Meghan Milbrath of University of Michigan: Dr. Milbrath will begin the day discussing bacterial diseases in the hive. She will cover how to recognize and diagnose sick bees, what the various kinds of bacterial diseases are and what to do with the colony and how to work with the vet. Following she will discuss winterizing the hive, winter biology of bees and what goes on in the hive in the winter, and ways to manipulate the hive for best success.


Track 2: Farm Resilience: Soil Health and Farm Design: with Nic Welty of 9 Bean Rows: Nic will discuss soil management in permanent beds with a bonus a overview of soil physics, chemistry and biology. He will cover no-till-/low-till options, soil mindfulness, soil building, nutrient application and compost production with some hands-on tool talk. Following, Nic will go through whole farm management and design. Farm goal setting, building a strategic farm plan, equipment purchases and business planning will round out the afternoon.


Track 3: Seed Saving with Ben Cohen of Small House Farm: Ben will start with a brief farm walk to discuss flower structure, pollination and isolation requirements for seed production. Learn how to hand pollinate and process dry seed by threshing and winnowing using different techniques. Ben will also focus on the processing of wet seeds. Attendees will harvest and clean seeds from fruits like squash, melons, peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes and end the day discussing packing and storing seeds.

Afternoon Session: Whole farm management and design is the focus for this afternoon.  Nic will discuss farm goal setting, building a strategic farm plan, equipment purchases, and decision making and business planning. To end the day, Nic with conduct a hands-on harvest and wash/pack demonstration to drive home the discussion on improving system strategies.

Morning Session: The morning will start with a brief walk around the farm to discuss flower structure, pollination and isolation requirements for seed production. Following, attendees will enjoy trying their hand out at the skill of hand pollination including emasculation of tomato flowers and the basics of tomato breeding. To round out the morning Ben will discuss how to process dry seed by threshing and winnowing using different techniques.

Afternoon Session:  In the afternoon, Ben will focus on the processing of wet seeds. Together, the group will harvest and clean seeds from fruits like squash, melons, peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes and prepare the seeds for fermentation. Ben will close the day with a discussion on packaging and storage of seeds.
