Telepsychology and Interjurisdictional Practice

Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm

Location: Virtual

Instructor: Sara Smucker Barnwell, Ph.D.

CE credits: 3 CE's (pending)

Course Description:

This 3-hour presentation will review telepsychology fundamentals and the specific issues surrounding the interjurisdictional practice of telepsychology. What constitutes interjurisdictional practice? When is it appropriate to practice psychology across jurisdictional boundaries? What are the mechanisms to do this legally? What are the clinical, practical, and ethical considerations? The speaker will offer guidance to practitioners who are contemplating what role ethical interjurisdictional telepsychology will play in their practices moving forward. The discussion will include video demonstrations. This presentation qualifies for continuing education credits in ethics and for PSYPACT renewal. Time in the presentation will be divided between lecture, demonstration videos, and live Q&A with participants.

 Objectives:

At the end of this training participants will be able to:

  1. Define what constitutes interjurisdictional practice.
  2. Recognize three (3) key legal and ethical issues to consider when delivering remote care interjurisdictionally.
  3. Identify three (3) practical considerations when practicing across jurisdictions.
  4. Identify three (3) important criteria in selecting technology modalities appropriate for interjurisdictional telepsychology.
  5. Identify when psychologists ought to consider participation in PSYPACT versus other legal mechanisms for interjurisdictional practice.
