The National Institute for Jail Operations, in partnership with the Alabama Jail Administrators' Council, is pleased to offer a two-day legal-based training seminar on Inmate Classification for Alabama detention professionals, taking place July 28–29, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This intensive program, instructed by nationally recognized corrections expert Bill Wilson, will focus on building legally defensible classification systems rooted in current case law and state statutes—not simply “best practices.” Participants will learn how proper inmate classification reduces liability, strengthens duty-to-protect compliance, improves facility safety, and helps defend against costly Section 1983 litigation. Topics include objective classification basics, documentation strategies that withstand judicial scrutiny, due process considerations, and recognizing behavioral changes that require re-classification. With more than 35 years of jail experience, Bill Wilson brings practical, real-world expertise from leadership, training, and advisory roles across the corrections profession. Seating is limited to 60 attendees, so early registration is strongly encouraged.
