This is for local fire departments that wish to send multiple EMS providers. Please note that the fire departments will be responsible for issuing their students CMEs. Also, if a student wishes to take a pre-conference class they will need to register separately.

This course is the Skill Sign Off for the ACLS HeartCode.

HeartCode ACLS is the AHA’s blended learning delivery method for the AHA’s ACLS Course. HeartCode blended learning delivers quality resuscitation education regardless of where providers are located and gives them more control to complete the course at their own pace. Providers first complete the online portion of HeartCode ACLS and then complete a hands-on skills session with an AHA ACLS Instructor or on a simulation station. To enter the course, participants must complete a precourse self-assessment.

Our interactive session will include specific strategies to be an organized, approachable, and competent instructor. These strategies will allow your students to better understand and absorb the curriculum while relieving stress for both students and instructors. And, of course, it will be fun. This course is designed to teach attendees current moulage techniques-- everything they need to know to add realism to their EMS courses or drills. It will provide hands-on training on how to apply moulage for EMS scenarios including shock, bruises, wounds (cuts, lacerations, abrasions), fractures, and impalements. We will also discuss the need for and describe how to program a moulaged patient to behave realistically in a scenario. 

The Handtevy Pre-Hospital Pediatric Provider Course is a 8-hour live lecture and hands-on course that focuses on the skills needed to rapidly and accurately treat the sick and injured pediatric patient. The course uses the basic tenets of ACLS training as the foundation while still covering the basic pediatric ALS principles and nuances. The course and is intended to be used with the Handtevy Pediatric System.

Mental Health First Aid for Fire/EMS teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. It focuses on the unique experiences and needs of firefighters and EMS personnel and is a valuable resource that can make a difference in their lives, their coworkers’ and families’ lives, and the communities they serve.

ACLS standards have established pre-hospital 12 leads a Class 1 intervention. The class will be an interactive session to help identify infarct, injury and ischemia patterns as well as infarct pattern imitators. The Class will also use practice 12 leads to reinforce the material.

The course presents the three phases of tactical care and integrates parallel EMS nomenclature:

• Hot Zone/Direct Threat Care that is rendered while under attack or in adverse conditions.
• Warm Zone/Indirect Threat Care that is rendered while the threat has been suppressed but may resurface at any point.
• Cold Zone/Evacuation Care that is rendered while the casualty is being evacuated from the incident site. 

The 16-hour classroom course includes all new patient simulations and covers the following topics:

• Hemorrhage control including immediate action drills for tourniquet application throughout the course;
• Complete coverage of the MARCH assessment;
• Surgical airway control and needle decompression;
• Strategies for treating wounded responders in threatening environments;
• Caring for pediatric patients;
• Techniques for dragging and carrying victims to safety; and
• A final, mass-casualty/active shooter event simulation.

This course combines lecture/discussion and hands on, simulation based exercises to help EMS providers navigate birth outside the hospital. Topics include management of normal and abnormal birth, birth emergencies, assessment of the normal newborn, and identification of newborn outliers. Focus is on simplifying management by EMS of these infrequently utilized skills, while providing optimized care to mother and baby. In addition collaboration and communication during midwife assisted births will be discussed, and various birth scenarios simulated to include normal precipitous birth, management of shoulder dystocia, breech birth, prolapsed cord, avulsed cord, and management of a nuchal cord. Newborn management scenarios will include delayed cord clamping, immediate initiation of ventilations in the newborn when indicated, and management of newborns who need compressions and medications. Throughout the course attention will be given to trauma informed care for the mother and baby, with suggestions given on how to provide respectful, safe care while honoring the importance of birth in the lives of the family. Management of provider trauma will also be addressed, and modalities of care/healing discussed to help providers navigate the range of trauma that can often result from these cases, especially if there is a bad outcome.

The opening session will include a short introduction from the IREMSC staff and a town hall meeting with the State of Alaska EMS Office employees.

Learn from an oncologist how to take care of cancer patients.

“Perhaps the most important monitoring tool prehospital providers can use”, – end tidal waveform Capnography – isn’t just for respirations anymore. Using a simple four-step assessment technique, this program shows EMS providers of all levels how capnography can be used not only to confirm successful endotracheal intubation, but to evaluate shock in trauma patients, monitor for the return (or loss of) pulses during CPR, identify bronchospasm in asthma and hypoxic drive in COPD, to guide seizure management and paralytic medication administration, and much, much more. This case-driven session develops the fundamentals of capnography so that every EMS provider can improve the assessment, treatment and outcome for their patients using the diagnostic tools of end tidal waveform monitoring.

How would you take care of the patient who is exhibiting signs and symptoms of H.E.L.L.P. Syndrome? What sign is noted with Shoulder Dystocia? What maneuvers can you use to help with this problem. OB emergencies can lead to catastrophic outcomes. During this presentation we will look at OB cases, discuss finding and develop a plan to take care of the patients to ensure positive outcomes

Stress First Aid is a framework to improve recovery from stress reactions.

This Stress First Aid Briefing gives a practical set of actions which should be used whenever needed for

yourself or your peers. SFA addresses stress reactions before they create larger problems that can derail

health, relationships, or a career. sSFA fosters longevity on the job – in potentially stressful work

environments, the value of reducing the impact of stress translates into a stronger workforce, less turnover,

more productivity, and less likelihood of employees leaving the job prematurely.

SFA can reduce stigma by changing culture. SFA creates a common language with which to discuss stress

and stress reactions in an efficient way.

SFA is not meant to address all ranges of issues – it is a first aid model.

To think of stroke as a life or death situation is to over-simplify. The concept of

“Time Is Brain” doesn’t refer to inanimate neurons that die as a stroke progresses. Each moment of delay in stroke care can destroy not only a patient’s ability to perform activities to get through the day they can also lose cells that contain personality and memories. Even patients who survive may lose part of their life. As hospitals are developing new methods of treatment for stroke victims, what role is there for EMS? This program will examine new in-hospital treatments like site-specific thrombolytics, clot corkscrews, cranial hypothermia, and the critical role of EMS in each phase of Stroke Systems of Care. These systems rely on both ALS and BLS providers to not simply save patients’ lives. This lively, pertinent, and through-provoking lecture shows how the actions of EMS providers are critical to every step of saving stroke patients’ life’s.

What’s the big deal with the right side of the heart? It only has to pump blood the short distance to the lungs, right? But what happens when it suffers ischemia or, worse yet, an infarct? How do we identify and support someone having a right-sided problem or an Inferior Wall MI? Come find the answers, and more.

How do people slide from doing what’s right to doing what’s “good enough,” and how

do we reconnect them to a commitment to excellence? Inspiring and informative, Rom Duckworth shows how easy it can be for organizations and individuals to stray from the path of excellence and reminds us of the importance of what we do and why, in our unique profession, good enough is simply not good enough.

Highly interactive session featuring pre-hospital clinical scenarios that will provide a review of EMT medications, dosing and specific medication administration pearls.  This Hands-on class will review elements from the Handtevy Pediatric System and will focus on specific challenges EMS personnel encounter during dosing, drawing and administering of pediatric medications. 

The presentation will serve as a comprehensive review of sepsis with a focus on the role of pre-hospital care. Early recognition and intervention are critical to improve outcomes in sepsis. EMS in Alaska must be prepared to play a more active role in sepsis with prolonged pre-hospital and inter-facility transport times. This requires a robust set of protocols, adequate training, medications and equipment in combination with a highly involved medical director and close contact with medical control. These factors will be outlined and presented for discussion.

What are the types of LeFort Fractures a patient may sustain? What is happening when a patient has a basal skull fracture? Facial trauma and skull fractures can be difficult to manage and can have long term effects on patient’s. Using case presentations, we will discuss the differences noted in S / S of each injury and how to develop and implement a treatment plan to allow for the best patient outcome.

This program provides educators of all levels with insight into the sources of student issues as well as the mistakes that instructors commonly make that contribute to classroom unrest. Using lecture, role-play, and comedy, Rom Duckworth shows how educators can differentiate between difficult students and difficult behaviors, how to deal with immediate classroom problems, and what can be done to avoid trouble before it begins.

This 90 minute discussion will feature new research articles from the past 2 years that are informing the next generation of prehospital medicine. We

will review the authors, the methods, the conclusions, and the potential impact on Alaskan EMS. The interactive discussion will focus on the

difference between evidence-based science and evidence-based practice as well how local Alaskan departments might implement new practices or

the barriers to implementation now or in the future. This is not your ordinary “research lecture”. Come learn something new, novel, or notable to take

home to your department.

Community paramedicine exists to help fill a critical gap in the health care system—

responding to the medical needs of patients with chronic disease, especially those in

underserved communities, and ultimately improving the quality of life and health for

these populations. From managing chronic disease to providing preventive care to

coordinating health services, the community paramedic (CP) collaborates with a team of health care professionals to address health problems within their communities, reduce hospital readmissions, prevent unnecessary ambulance transports, and help patients manage their medical needs to achieve the best possible long-term outcome.

EMS is a challenging and unpredictable profession. I will share a variety of calls from the funny to the bizarre to the devastating situations I have encountered and show how these situations help us to grow and be better at what we do.
