Thursday Apr 11, 2024 @  10:45:AM  —  12:00:PM MDT

The Idaho Coalition for Community Schools was recently awarded a 5-year $46.5 million Community Schools statewide expansion grant.

The Community School Strategy is creating lasting change for students and families by coordinating resources and partnerships through local schools to increase family stability and expand opportunities for all students. Students often face barriers outside the classroom that make it difficult for them to be successful inside the classroom. By finding the right partners to help address these barriers, children and families are supported both inside and outside the classroom. As a hyper-local strategy that is nationally recognized and has a growing evidence base, Community Schools have an impressive return on investment and are an effective way of leveraging local strengths of a community to address their unique challenges.

Join us to learn about the growth of Community Schools throughout Idaho, the new Rural Expansion Initiative of the Coalition and the upcoming opportunities for your school district to engage.

Disaster Relief Mobilization- Community Resilience Model Preparation Progra …

Thursday Apr 11, 2024 @  01:15:PM  —  02:30:PM MDT

This program creates a structure to reduce the impact of traumatic experiences during and after an event/disaster. This is a preparation and prevention strategy that creates "boots on the ground" to meet the immediate biological, psychological and social needs of the community. This model mobilizes community members, first responders and natural leaders within the community to address immediate needs when access to mental health providers is often limited or inaccessible. Utilizing the Community Resilience Model (CRM) as a strategic and coordinated approach, can create intentional support within schools and their communities to respond to crisis and disaster with intention.

The Role of Schools in Primary Prevention
The Role of Schools in Primary Prevention

Thursday Apr 11, 2024 @  02:45:PM  —  04:00:PM MDT

The School as a Protective Factor approach represents an evidence-based attempt to build on the foundation provided by previous work on student resilience and school climate while addressing previously identified limitations of those concepts. The School as a Protective Factor approach offers a new framework for conceptualizing, measuring, and establishing protective social environments that co-promote academic achievement and student health in schools, especially student mental health and substance use/abuse prevention. The School as a Protective Factor approach presents a simple, easy-to-use means of ensuring a school social environment that meets the developmental, academic, and health needs of all children and adolescents while maximizing protection across a range of desired outcomes. Perhaps most importantly, it does so in a manner that is manageable and easily integrated into every aspect of schooling, likely to resonate with the practical experience of school personnel, and includes brief, effective, and free measurement tools.

Become proficient in practical intervention strategies through Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) training.

?

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) is a powerful addition to existing strategies to reduce the risk of suicide death in at-risk people while respecting their rights and autonomy. CALM is a practical intervention to increase the time and distance between individuals at risk of suicide and the most common and lethal methods of suicide, particularly firearms. The oldest and most widely-used training on lethal means safety, CALM teaches why means matter and equips individuals with tools to intervene effectively with those at risk for suicide both upstream–before a crisis hits–as well as in times of crisis. Versions are available for both clinicians and non-clinicians.

According to the 2021 Idaho Healthy Youth Survey nearly 32% of Idaho 6th-12th graders reported that they had drank alcohol at least once in their lifetime, while nearly 18% reported that they had used a vape pen or e-cigarette, and 12% reported that they had used marijuana. The implementation of effective, evidence-based primary prevention programs can play a critical role in efforts to prevent youth substance use and misuse. In this session participants will learn about evidence-based programs (EBPs) – what are they, why are they important, how do you identify the best EBP for your school and student population, and how do you implement them effectively. This session will provide foundational knowledge on EBPs and lay the groundwork for attendees that are interested in attending the subsequent EBP-focused Substance Misuse Track session at 10:45am.

HOPE—Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences—and ACE—Adverse Childhood Experiences—are key concepts in understanding what we need to do in our homes and communities to create the best environments for children to thrive. When we say “HOPE Conquers ACEs” we mean that when children grow up with a preponderance of positive experiences in their lives and when we can reduce the adverse experiences, whole generations of children’s lives will be better. This workshop will explore how HOPE practice builds a safety net to prevent future substance misuse.
