Resilience for Supervisors

Ann Marie Roepke, Ph.D.

Description of Training: Caring for others is a rewarding profession – and a demanding one. As providers in helping professions, how can we prevent burnout and attend to our own wellness? As supervisors, how can we care for our own well-being while also fostering the well-being of the individuals we supervise and mentor? Resilience-based approaches can help. In this 6-hour training, participants will explore strategies for fostering resilience and preventing burnout, including rediscovering meaning and purpose in our work, boosting positive emotions, building high-quality connections, bringing mindfulness into daily life, and identifying opportunities to advocate for environmental/systemic changes. Training participants will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways including lecture, demonstrations, discussions, and experiential learning activities designed to provide a richer understanding of strategies to foster resilience and prevent burnout in therapeutic and healthcare settings.

Objectives:

At the end of this training participants will be able to:

  • Describe the three key components of burnout
  • Explain three strategies for fostering resilience in the face of work-related stressors
  • Assess how, where, and when resilience strategies could be usefully applied in the participant’s own professional setting

Audience:

Supervisors in therapeutic, healthcare, and other supportive settings. Although core components of this training will be applicable to a range of healthcare/helping professions, this training is designed primarily for professionals working in mental health / behavioral health (e.g. clinical social workers, marriage & family therapists, mental health counselors, psychologists, etc.).
