Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

VA FARMS, Wednesday, Dec 8th, 2021 (1:00-4:00pm)

Online/Zoom

Ann Marie Roepke, Ph.D.

The majority of adults have experienced at least one traumatic event in life, and trauma exposure is even more prevalent for our Veterans. Although many people experience resilient responses to trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common challenge in the wake of traumatic experiences. PTSD can be understood as the brain’s and body’s ongoing attempts to keep us safe by staying in ‘survival mode’ even after the immediate threat is over. In this 3-hour introductory-level training, we will explore what trauma is; how trauma impacts our brains, our minds, and our lives; what are the core features of PTSD and some common forms that PTSD can take; and what types of support and treatment can foster recovery from PTSD.

Training participants will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways including lecture, videos/demonstrations, discussions, and experiential learning activities designed to offer a richer understanding of trauma and PTSD. This educational training is designed for people from a variety of professional backgrounds (i.e., it is NOT designed solely with mental health professionals in mind).

Note: this training is provided as information and education, and is not intended as therapy, healthcare, medical advice, or a doctor-patient relationship; if you have questions about the role of trauma in your life, please consult your healthcare provider.

Learning objectives. At the end of this training participants will be able to:

1. Define trauma

2. Explain how trauma impacts the brain, the body, mental health, and relationships

3. List the 4 core features of PTSD

4. Describe 2 types of support or treatment that can foster recovery from PTSD
