Doubleweave Overshot / Complimentary Plain Weave
Doubleweave Overshot / Complimentary Plain Weave
5/24 LEFT
Item photo

Instructor: Tom Knisely

Skill Level: Intermediate

Required Skills: Students must be able to warp loom prior to class.

Description:

Complimentary Plain Weave is a fascinating threading system that allows you to take any of your favorite Overshot Patterns and weave them as if it were a Double Weave. This is particularly helpful because it weaves a Plain Weave surface without the typical weft floats associated with traditional Overshot. The fabric is totally reversable and can weave with different color definitions on each side. You can also change out the treadling order to create your own new pattern. How cool is that?

Complimentary Plain Weave is very useful for placemats, table runners, upholstery or any textile that needs to be hard wearing.

For this workshop we will be limiting our explorations to just four shaft drafts. Hot pad width warps will allow you to weave many different samples that are not only useful but would make nice gifts.

Materials Fee: $0

Students to Bring: A loom warped and ready to weave, two boat shuttles, bobbins that work with your shuttles, a bobbin winder, and recommended thread for the workshop. Standard supplies such as scissors, tape measure, pins, and any of your favorite tools that you think you might need, as well as a notebook and pen or pencil for note taking.

A Next Step in Tapestry
A Next Step in Tapestry
5/12 LEFT
Item photo

Instructor: MJ Lord

Skill Level: Intermediate

Required Skills: Basic tapestry weaving skills as taught in beginning tapestry class.

Description:

After you have taken a beginning tapestry class, what’s the next step? This is often the sticking point for new tapestry weavers. There are many possibilities, and this class will offer one approach. We will start by looking through images of creatures, for example, birds and butterflies, looking for pattern and color ideas. The class will not be trying for photorealism, but to come up with abstract designs using the color and pattern ideas. We will use those ideas to develop a cartoon to weave a small tapestry about 7” x 7” and begin weaving. We will consider value and contrast, which are important to creating good tapestry designs. This may sound like a lot to do in a few days, but the overall goal will be to have fun and learn a few new things!

Materials Fee: $15 for a warp for a 7" warp and a range of weft alternatives. For this class, weavers are encouraged to bring their own loom pre-warped for the class and their own weft yarns. Instructions and sources can be emailed in advance.

The materials fee is paid directly to the instructor during class.

Students to Bring: Your own tapestry loom, pre-warped for a 7" tapestry at 8 epi, and a selection of weft yarns for tapestry. Drawing or mixed media paper plus colored pencils or paints for cartoon development, and basic tools such as scissors and bobbins.

Random Weave Basketry
Random Weave Basketry
5/10 LEFT
Item photo

Instructor: Nancy Bindig

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Required Skills: No previous weaving experience is required, however someone who is familiar with another type of basketry construction would benefit. The workshop will introduce some intermediate level skill as we progress. Moderate manual dexterity is needed. Hand strength level required is low to moderate. Some materials require being first soaked in water. Optional (Note): If incorporating the natural of palm inflorescence, this may require stronger hand strength.

Description:

This workshop will introduce the beginner and intermediate weaver to Random Weave basketry. This basketry construction lets you work with a variety of materials to make an organic and freeform shape. The shaping can be geometric or organic and has the potential to be very organic in nature. Once the framework is established, the simple tabby weave makes this a very relaxing craft activity.

Starting with a simple ball form, we’ll use basic filling techniques to build a shape using random weave. We’ll quickly advance to weaving a nest and/or wall pocket basket with a shape built from a wire armature. This frame shape will be filled in using round reeds and later adding palm inflorescence for texture. On Day 2, I will show how to build a second way by using round reed and clips. The shape can be pre-conceived or formed organically and “randomly.”

Students will be working with round reed, wire, and/or natural materials provided in class, and will be shown how to collect & harvest Florida Palm Inflorescence materials. Palm shoots will be available to weave with on day 2. Depending on speed and size, 2-3 baskets will be made during this workshop. Students are encouraged to bring in any soft or pliable weaving materials and embellishments from home. Surface design techniques will be introduced on Day 3 so you can add a final personal touch to your baskets!

Materials Fee: $60 for enough materials to complete 2 small baskets and 1 larger basket: wires, round reeds, palm inflorescence, feathers, wrapping cottons, embellishment items, glue, hot glue gun, and beads.

The materials fee is paid directly to the instructor during class.

Students to Bring: An old hand towel for drying wet reeds, a sharp pair of hand clippers (Fiskars are good), scissors, and an awl. Optional items such as any soft or pliable materials and embellishment items to add or weave into your basket: yarn, wire, twisted paper, beads, feathers, etc. Comfortable clothing is advised, and an apron is optional.

Fashion Show
Fashion Show

The Fashion Show theme is "Time to Take the Stage." The music will be Broadway hits, from King Tut, Singing in the Rain, Moon River, and more.

NOTE: You are able to participate in the Fashion Show, even if you do not register for it now. Whether you register now or onsite, you will need to fill out an entry form for each item you are entering once you are onsite. However, it helps us plan our logistics if we have an idea how many people to expect.

Fiber Exhibit
Fiber Exhibit

You must be a member of FTWG to enter in the Fiber Exhibit.

Each member may enter up to 6 pieces in the Fiber Exhibit. Each winner receives two ribbons -- one to display with the item and one to wear.

Onsite you must complete a form for each item you are entering in the Exhibit.

You are able to enter items in the Exhibit onsite, even if you did not do so during registration. However, it helps us with our logistics if we have an idea how many items to expect.
