Title: Clinical Documentation and Record Keeping: Ethics and Law

Description: Psychologists, social workers, and counselors constantly have to juggle their time providing therapeutic services and documenting the clinical services they provide. Because patient care is more stimulating than composing progress notes, the latter is often neglected. It is important for clinicians to appreciate why clinical documentation is so important and how to document their work ethically and in compliance with State laws and regulations. Using his integrative model of ethical decision making, CLEAR+ Lenses, Dr. Heitt will discuss effective, efficient, and ethical documentation practices. Case discussions with active audience participation will demonstration application of the CLEAR+ model to real life situations, making it easier for participants to implement concrete practice changes the next time they pick up a pen or start clicking a keyboard.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to list several purposes of good quality clinical documentation.

2. Participants will be able to analyze and apply the applicable laws and regulations relevant to clinical documentation.

3. Participants will be able to apply this knowledge to real-life case scenarios using the CLEAR+ lenses model of ethical decision-making.
