Description
In this training, attendees will learn the impact of traditional, hegemonic masculinities on men's experience and expressions of distress, often by enacting high-risk behaviors. You will also learn how masculinities impacts help-seeking behaviors, and in particular how male gender norms inform men's use of behavioral health services. Finally, attendees will learn how to adapt and apply evidence-based strategies to address emotional regulation and high-risk behaviors using culturally responsive approaches.
Matthew is a clinical psychologist and researcher who studies Male Gender Norms, emotional dysregulation and high-risk behaviors in male populations, including veterans, first-responders, and rural residents. He spent nearly 20 years working within the Veterans Affairs and holds an academic affiliation with the University of Washington’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He is currently the Senior Director of Quality Assurance for Lyra’s Direct Access Network.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this training participants will be able to:
1. Be able to discuss the impact of traditional, hegemonic masculinities on men's experience and expressions of distress, often by enacting high-risk behaviors.
2. To explain how masculinities impacts help-seeking behaviors, and in particular how male gender norms inform men's use of behavioral health services.
3. Be able to adapt and apply evidence-based strategies to address emotional regulation and high-risk behaviors using culturally responsive approaches.
