Class description:

IBC provides basic concepts of disabled accessible design and construction using the International Building Code and ICC A117.1 as it relates to non-residential structures. The first portion of the class will discuss WHEN accessible features are required by the IBC. The remainder of the class will be devoted to HOW a building and its site is made accessible by the A117.1 Standard. This class is intended for the code user who is either new to accessible design or is in need of a refresher on the ever-changing requirements. Application of accessibility requirements for existing buildings will be discussed.

Participants will receive instruction for the review of typical residential plans in order to identify compliance with the key requirements of the International Residential Code. This will include provision of a set of drawings and various exercises. A plan review checklist will also be provided. The class will cover all aspects of residential plan review, including life safety, structural, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems.

Participants will work to enhance knowledge related to the proper assemblies and what allowances are acceptable using the UL guide information related to fire resistance. Attendees will use review common field application practices via photos and mock up assemblies to further their knowledge of installation, inspection and maintenance of fire-resistant construction assemblies and the tested assemblies used to seal breaches in construction. All of this will provide an understanding of the basic inspection of firestopping will help code officials when they are witnessing these tests in the field.

Class description:

Grounding and Bonding encompasses some of the most important and yet least understood elements of the Code. This seminar will focus on understanding how these elements join together to provide a safe environment in which electricity can be used. Class will be based upon the 2020 NEC.

Wildland Urban Interface Code and fire prevention techniques in the WUI - PPN: 33412 Barbara Rice / Shums Coda - Confirmed This class will provide a review of the 2018 ICC WUI code and look at some plans for review activities. There will also be discussion on adoption of the WUI code and programs to engage communities in best defensible space and mitigation practices to protect their property from wildfire. This full day class is designed for residential inspectors that are moving into the area of commercial inspections. The class will briefly discuss the preparation and tools needed to conduct an inspection and the interaction between the inspector and contractor. The majority of the class will focus on the technique and technical aspects of commercial building inspections. Subjects discussed in the class will include foundations, wood framing, light-gauge steel framing, fire-resistive rated construction, means of egress and accessibility.

Participants will come to understand how ASHRAE 90.1 fits into the full picture of energy code enforcement and when a designer or building owner might choose 90.1 over the IECC. We will look at the differences between the code and the standard while we walk through how to effectively use the standard that is gaining a lot of traction in the commercial building design community and is required for all federal buildings.
