10-Day Wildland Fire Academy - June 18-27, 2024
10-Day Wildland Fire Academy - June 18-27, 2024
Nominations Close May 27, 2024
THIS EVENT IS 100% FREE!

DNR’s Wildland Fire Academy Program hosts interagency academy sessions to provide quality wildland fire training at no cost to Washington's in-state interagency firefighting partners. If you are affiliated with Washington state's local, state, federal, or tribal firefighting agencies participating in wildland fire suppression, you can register for an academy. You must also meet the qualification and prerequisite requirements specific to each course.

DNR's 10-day academies will be at the WSP Fire Training Academy near North Bend. The WSP facility provides us with a central location with classrooms and immediately adjacent DNR land for field exercise use and room for establishing our fire camp for the sessions. At each academy, we'll offer three different cohorts – Basic Firefighter, Intermediate Firefighter, and Single Resource. Students enrolled in a specific cohort will attend the entire session and complete multiple courses.

The three cohorts will include:

Basic Firefighter – FFT2 curriculum plus scene observations/origin protection, pump operations, and basic air operations

(S-130, S-190, L-180, FI-110, S-211, S-270)

Intermediate Firefighter – FFT1 curriculum plus intermediate fire behavior, firing operations, and followership to leadership

(S-131, S-290, S-219, L-280)

Single Resource – Crew/engine/heavy equipment boss curriculum plus WUI operations

(S-230, S-231, S-236, S-215)

The student is expected to take all the courses in the cohort and be there for the entire session. There will not be any a-la-carte course selection for the 10-day academies. For folks only needing individual classes, we will refer you to our standalone course offerings throughout the year.

The academy sessions will be in a fire camp setting with tent camping, and a DNR kitchen will provide meals at no cost. Partner agencies will be responsible for their own staff’s costs, such as transportation and salary/benefits, while attending the academy session. Each session is 10 days long and does include one weekend.

Click on the tab labeled "Overview Agenda," in the upper left-hand corner of this page to get a sense of how the days will be structured. Note that Day 1 begins at 1300, and Day 10 ends at 1100 to allow for travel from/to the home unit on the first/last day of the session.
