In this course, students will explore the evolution of accessible design in the built environment, tracing the journey of individuals with disabilities and the progress made in achieving recognition and accommodation in building codes. We’ll delve into the legal frameworks surrounding accessibility, with a particular focus on the laws and regulations in both the U.S. and Colorado. Starting with IBC Chapter 11, we’ll lay the groundwork for understanding how accessibility is scoped for both residential and commercial buildings. Additionally, we’ll examine the specifics of ICC A117.1-2017, breaking down the standards that shape accessibility in construction across the country.

We will provide an overview of what is in the energy code, and provide guidance for what needs to be provided for a review to be performed. We are going to review plans with examples of these provision, both good and maybe not so good. Let's talk about the process that is needed to get a project compliant with the energy code.

Sometimes, we get caught up in fights or battles that aren't even ours, and it leaves us feeling drained and burned out. But it doesn't have to be that way!
