Beyond the Crown: A Guide to Effective Implant Maintenance

A complimentary CE program

PROGRAM SUMMARY

In the modern general practice, dental implants have become a primary solution for tooth loss. However, the longevity of these restorations depends heavily on the specialized care provided by the dental hygienist. This course is designed to bridge the gap between surgical placement and long-term health. We will dive into the fundamental anatomy of the implant-abutment complex, master the latest classification systems for peri-implant health, and review evidence-based instrumentation protocols. Attendees will leave with a clear decision tree for identifying early complications and implementing effective home-care strategies to protect their patients’ investments.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Master the anatomy of the implant-abutment complex and identify the specific components you’ll encounter in a general practice.
  • Effectively communicate the risks, benefits, and long-term alternatives to tooth loss so patients feel confident in their treatment.
  • Gain a clear, clinical framework for classifying peri-implant health and identifying the early warning signs of mucositis and peri-implantitis.
  • Identify “red flags” in both pre-operative planning and post-operative healing to prevent implant failure before it starts.
  • Review the latest evidence-based literature on safe instrumentation—know exactly which tools to use (and which to avoid) to protect the implant surface.
  • Master oral hygiene protocols and post-op coaching techniques that empower patients to protect their investment between recalls.

About Alison Stahl, RDH, BS, CEO

Alison specializes in the “Black Box” of dentistry: the maintenance and longevity of fixed full-arch implant rehabilitations. With over 23 years of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist and a decade-long focus as an Implant Care Practitioner, she has performed more than 11,000 fixed prosthesis removals. This high-volume clinical experience has provided her with a rare, longitudinal perspective on why implants succeed, why they fail, and how the hygiene department holds the key to the “All-on-X” patient’s long-term health. She bridges the gap between surgical delivery and lifelong maintenance, and translates complex mechanical and biological data into actionable clinical protocols for dental teams nationwide.
