Lead Instructor: Ross Avichouser

Course Coordinator: Krissy Mitchell

Date: November 17-19, 2026

Time: 0900-1600

Location: Virtual - ILT

Nominations Close: October 29, 2026

Description: This is a skills-driven, blended course preparing developing fireline supervisors to assess the fire environment and anticipate fire behavior changes. Students learn how fuels, weather, and topography interact, then apply this knowledge to safe, more effective decision-making and risk management on the fireline.

Target Audience: Intended for single resource bosses (SRB) with completed taskbooks, those who will be engine leaders, and SRB trainee positions next season.

The course is a blended training combining an Online Training (OLT) component and an Instructor-led Training (ILT) component.

Online Training component (OLT): Builds on the S-190 with deeper instruction on fuels, weather, and topography. Covers analysis of environmental variables and their impact on fire behavior and takes approximately 22 hours. Students must complete the OLT and pass the assessment to receive a Memo of Completion, which is required before taking the ILT. The memo of completion must be submitted in advance of attending the ILT.

Instructor-led Training component (ILT): Reinforces OLT content through real-world scenarios and practical exercises. Successful completion earns an NWCG Course Completion Certificate.

Objectives:

• Identify and describe the attributes of the fire environment that influence wildland fire behavior.

• Acquire, interpret, and communicate the characteristics of the fire environment.

• Recognize the critical interactions between the elements of the fire environment and their effects on wildland fire behavior.

• Anticipate changes in fire behavior that will impact on-the-ground decision-making and risk management.
