From cases of cardiac arrest to airway and ventilation management. Patient assessment as an initial triage through primary assessment and secondary to ongoing reassessment. In medical and trauma cases alike, the case is made for using capnography as a key patient assessment tool for every patient. From the triage of any patient to the ongoing monitoring of the patient. In fact, anyone with a problem with ABC’s should have continuous monitoring of ETCO2 and waveform. Be a part of this comprehensive course that explains in detail why you measure CO2, how the machine measures it, how the waveforms are made and real cases from A-Z. Come and learn how to fully integrate this session into your practice and utilize it to its fullest potential! Capnography: It’s not just for confirming tube placement!

"The Buck Stops Here: Creating & Maintaining a Culture of Accountability"

Let’s explore the concept of accountability as a leadership principle from multiple perspectives. Leaders do not blame others for what happens, they make things right and create an environment where others can succeed. What exactly does accountability look like, and how can leaders learn to foster it within their organizations?

Severe Weather and A New Chief…. The not so perfect storm.?

On September 17, 2019 severe weather threatened Chesterfield County Virginia, resulting in several incident responses from a EF2 Tornado. The tornado covered approximately nine miles of destruction path, caused serve damage to several large structures, and was responsible for several building collapses along the Hull Street Road corridor. This class will focus on the lessons learned from the after-action report, to include organizational, incident and timeline overview, incident response, mitigation, demobilization phases. We will then take a detailed look at the lessons learned from the above areas so that other may learn from our experience. The class will include audio of first-hand video footage, incident wave file, and other auditory components to illustrate the lessons reinforced and learned. Those lessons include command presence, ICS organizational and strategic guidance during high risk, low frequency emergency events. I look forward to a engaging in a facilitated discussion during our time together.

Protecting Your Brand

In today’s climate and culture protecting your brand or that of the organization you work for or represent is more challenging than ever, but it doesn’t have to be. This class will look at organizations who have been successful at protecting their brand as well as those who haven’t been successful in protecting their brand. Collectively we will facilitate a conversation on how you can be the change agent and create a culture of members who willing step up and protect your organization brand in all interactions.

This (4) hour workshop is designed to prepare EMS providers to work with Law Enforcement during an Active Threat of Aggressive Deadly Behavior Incidents. This workshop will fill the gap in knowledge that exists between law enforcement and EMS providers. EMS providers will learn how to respond to and care for patients in a civilian tactical environment to decrease preventable deaths. As these events become more prevalent then we wish, first responders need to train to learn each other's capabilities, so they are able to perform when needed. The time to train and learn from each other is now, not the day of. Failure to plan is planning to fail.

In EMS field practice, you may only get one shot at a skill or critical thinking decision. Sometimes a life or death situation presents to you. Are you prepared for this type of decision? Hours spent in lectures and reading books cannot prepare you for this. Cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills are one thing, putting them together in a critical environment is another. This is achieved through simulation. Come join Virginia State CE Educator Bob Page as he leads you through an unforgettable experience “putting together” all that you know and adding things that you didn’t in the context of actual cases on high fidelity Human patient simulators. In this session you will lead your team and work cases real time, including hands on assessment, decision making and actual hands on treatment, the simulator responds to your therapy. After the scenario the team will debrief to learn and sharpen your clinical edges. The arena setting allows those not in the group to observe the case and learn as if they were actually working the cases. In a short amount of time, participants will get maximum amount of exposure.

Time is the enemy in cardiac arrest. Once the heart stops, rescuers often can’t physically reach the victim quickly enough and/or act effectively to save them. We have reached an impenetrable wall called time. We need to cheat time. This presentation will reveal how the apparent lack of benefit from standard ACLS treatments -- like defibrillation, epinephrine, antiarrhythmic drugs -- is due more to our delay in their administration than their lack of efficacy. This presentation will discuss the need to reconfigure how we respond to life-threatening emergencies like cardiac arrest, supply and empower lay bystanders to initiate definitive treatments earlier while EMS units are enroute, and employ novel strategies allowing the human body to withstand longer periods of resuscitation with full neurological recovery.

Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment will be provided to each participant.

Resuscitation of the critically ill is one of the most stressful and frustrating components of our clinical practice, yet among the most rewarding. Our patients deserve excellence in our ability to provide safe invasive procedures. These procedures are often required to save a life yet are often not utilized, because of lack of practice and familiarity with the procedure itself, and advances in equipment and technique.

This hands-on lab is designed to improve the EMS provider’s competence while performing invasive emergency procedures in a safe and controlled environment. The lab will utilize fresh, unembalmed cadavers, which closely simulate the anatomy and feel of an actual patient. Each participant is closely supervised during invasive procedures.

BLS Skills will include anatomy review and airway management.

Where am I heading? Is it the right direction? Do I have the right plan to be successful? These are daunting questions for sure. And these are questions that most of us have asked ourselves many times over with no definitive answer. More often than not, we allow our work life to be mapped out for us through employee performance reviews and employer issued development plans with little or no thought given to your own personal dynamic. This session will have you mapping out your own path, on your own terms, with the end in mind.  Are you responsible for the development of others? Methods used in this session will help you to motivate your employees by giving them attainable self-set goals that fit their home work-life balance.

Launched in October 2015 by the White House, Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and a call to action. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage healthcare professionals and the lay public to become trained, equipped and empowered to assist in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. No matter how rapid the arrival of professional responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene. A person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes, therefore it is important to quickly stop the blood loss. Those nearest to someone with life threatening injuries are best positioned to provide first care. According to a recent National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under age 46. Remember to be aware of your surroundings and move yourself and the injured person to safety, if necessary.

You will learn what everyone should know to stop bleeding after an injury. This course focuses on treatment in the first few minutes after the injury. Once you have successfully completed this program, we will teach you how to become a Stop the Bleed instructor so that you can take this information to people in the areas you serve. Stop the Bleed can be taught in schools, businesses, and churches.  A great outreach training opportunity for your EMS agency.

BLS Skills will include anatomy review, airway management, and tourniquets.

For 30 years, Bob has been delivering this course to Emergency and Critical Care providers worldwide. If anyone told you that you could take a 12 lead class and have fun, would you believe them? Presented by Bob Page, Author of the book 12 Lead ECG for Acute and Critical Care Providers, this 8-hour, highly motivating, non-stop interactive course on 12-Lead ECG is comprehensive including proper lead placement, axis and hemiblock determination, bundle branch blocks, differentiating wide complex tachycardia and myocardial infarction recognition. Also included is the use of a 15-lead ECG for increased sensitivity for STEMI. Participants in the program will read approximately 200 12-lead ECGs, gaining both experience and confidence in their newly learned skill. This is a great course for EMS and hospitals implementing STEMI programs or for continuing professional development.

The AIRVO 2 generates high flows of warmed and humidified respiratory gases, delivered to spontaneously breathing patients through a variety of nasal, tracheostomy and mask interfaces., An innovative oxygen system, providing and effective, versatile solution for the delivery of oxygen therapy for both pediatric and adult patients. The flow may be from 2 – 60L/min depending on the type of interface.

As a result of prospective, randomized clinical trials, another option has emerged for the patient with hypoxemic respiratory failure. Heated, humidified, high-flow nasal cannula oxygen has been available for over a decade, but refinements and increasing clinical experience have made it a solid alternative for management that exists in the spectrum of options before noninvasive and invasive mechanical ventilation. This modality was initially developed for neonatal patients, and refinements have permitted its use in adults. Conventional oxygen therapy is not well tolerated at high flow rates because of problems with unheated and non-humidified oxygen. The high-flow nasal cannula oxygen systems are able to heat and humidity, improving patient tolerance and comfort.

Human trafficking may sound more like a plot in a movie than something that is happening in our own communities. Human trafficking occurs when force, fraud, or coercion is used to control another person for the purpose of engaging in forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. Police, Fire, EMS and medical personnel may come into contact with these people through the course of their duties. Do you know what you would do and how you identify this potential victim?
