This half-day course will cover key requirements of the 2023 NEC related to transformers (Article 450) and motors (Article 430). Topics to be covered for transformers include: overcurrent protection (primary and secondary), conductor ampacity (primary and secondary), disconnecting means, location, installation, grounding and bonding, and signage. For motors, topics to be covered include: feeder and branch circuit conductor sizing, single and multiple motors, determining overload protection ratings, determining short-circuit protection ratings, and disconnect requirements.

NEC Wire Requirements & Sizing, Including Box Fill & Pull Boxes – This half day course will explain in detail the general requirements of Article 300 of the NEC and will also go in depth on wire sizing provisions of Article 310. Examples and calculations will also be presented in order to walk the class through how to properly size wires, including wire ampacity derations. Topics covered include: general wiring requirements, underground installations, protection of conductors from damage, wet locations, securing and supporting, mechanical continuity, raceway installations, ampacities of conductors, ampacity derations and adjustment factors, terminal ratings, and identification of conductors. The course will also explain key box fill and pull box requirements of Article 314. This presentation is based on the 2023 NEC.

2024 IBC Update: This class will provide a brief synopsis of some of the key changes that have occurred in the current version of the IBC in relation to the previous version. The class will focus on significant changes made to nonstructural provisions (i.e., Chapters 1-16 and 24-33) and will also highlight some of the changes made to the referenced standards.

New Technology: This eight (8) hour course will explore rainwater catchment systems; solar hot water; reclaimed, onsite reuse and grey water systems; and other new and emerging technology and methods. Relevant portions of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), including Appendices as well as Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard for the Built Environment (WEStand) will provide the basis for this class. A brief, high-level overview of the Water Demand Calculator will also be considered.

Commercial & Residential Energy Storage Systems (ESS) – This is a full-day (8 hour) course. Energy storage systems (ESS) are increasingly being installed throughout the country. Understanding the requirements governing ESS, and knowing how the systems are to be installed, is essential. This course will focus on commercial and residential energy storage systems and will outline the key requirements and concepts for ESS. Key topics to be covered include UL 9540 listing, large-scale fire testing (UL 9540A), maximum equipment and system sizes, allowable locations, separation between battery units, clearances around equipment, disconnects/shutdown devices, and overcurrent protection. Example system diagrams will also be explained to help attendees understand the layout and equipment used for a variety of commonly installed ESS. This course will be beneficial for inspectors, plan reviewers, fire officials, installers, and designers. The course is based on the 2024 IFC, 2023 NEC, and 2024 IRC.

IBC Multifamily Dwellings: This class will focus on the specific code provisions for multifamily dwellings including townhouses, apartments, hotels, and congregate living facilities. This course will cover the four different groups of R occupancies in the IBC and provide examples of determining occupancy groups, live/work units will also be covered. The course will also clarify when to use the IRC or the IBC for buildings. It will include information for podium structures and fire separation for residential occupancies. This course will discuss common issues and code violations for multifamily projects including recommendations for design. Accessibility requirements for dwelling units will not be included in this course.
