Diagnosis and Management of Common Oral Lesions in the Dental Practice

Course Description:
This seminar will provide a case-based review of common lesions of the oral mucosa and jaws that may be encountered in dental practice. Cases will be presented in a sequence that mirrors typical patient flow in a dental office. Through correlation of medical history, clinical, and radiographic features, participants will review key diagnostic criteria, distinguishing characteristics, and representative clinical presentations of these conditions. The course will include discussion of diagnostic reasoning, differential diagnosis, and evidence-based management strategies within the scope of practice of general dentists and non-surgical specialists.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Recognize common oral and jaw lesions based on clinical and radiographic presentation.
• Apply diagnostic criteria to distinguish among lesions with similar appearances.
• Develop differential diagnoses for lesions encountered in general dental practice.
• Identify appropriate, evidence-based management strategies within the general dentist’s or non-surgical specialist’s scope of care.

About Dr. Ricardo Padilla
Dr. Padilla is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist originally from Guatemala that completed his oral and maxillofacial pathology training at the University of Florida. He served as a full-time faculty member at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Dentistry for 23 years. From 2006 to 2024, he directed the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology residency and master's program. In February 2025, Dr. Padilla joined Head and Neck Specialists, a multi-specialty group of board-certified physicians, dentists, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals in Charleston, South Carolina. His current practice focuses on the clinical and pathological diagnosis and non-surgical management of oral, salivary gland, jaw, and head and neck lesions in a multidisciplinary setting.
