Course Description:
This course will provide a comprehensive review of the oral, head, and neck examination with emphasis on evidence-based cancer screening. The material will follow the sequence of patient flow in a dental office, beginning with the medical history interview and update, followed by the extraoral and intraoral clinical examination. Participants will learn systematic approaches to patient assessment and gain insight into recognizing early signs of potentially malignant and malignant lesions. The course will also present examples of relevant lesions, including premalignant, malignant, and infectious disorders, to illustrate clinical findings and enhance diagnostic recognition. Key questions and communication strategies will be discussed to improve risk evaluation and promote early detection.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Perform a thorough oral, head, and neck examination following evidence-based protocols.
• Recognize clinical features suggestive of premalignant, malignant, and infectious lesions.
• Conduct effective medical history interviews and updates as part of comprehensive patient assessment.
• Integrate the examination sequence into daily clinical practice to improve diagnostic accuracy and cancer screening outcomes.

About Dr. Ricardo Padilla
Dr. Padilla is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist originally from Guatemala that completed his oral and maxillofacial pathology training at the University of Florida. He served as a full-time faculty member at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Dentistry for 23 years. From 2006 to 2024, he directed the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology residency and master's program. In February 2025, Dr. Padilla joined Head and Neck Specialists, a multi-specialty group of board-certified physicians, dentists, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals in Charleston, South Carolina. His current practice focuses on the clinical and pathological diagnosis and non-surgical management of oral, salivary gland, jaw, and head and neck lesions in a multidisciplinary setting.
