Connect Suicide Postvention Training
In Oregon, Connect postvention refers to a nationally recognized, best-practice training program that equips professionals and communities to respond in a coordinated, comprehensive, and compassionate way in the aftermath of a suicide. The goal is to promote healing for survivors, mitigate the negative effects of exposure to suicide, and reduce the risk of further suicides (contagion).
Target Audience: The training is geared toward professionals who are likely to be involved in responding to a suicide death in their community. This includes school personnel, first responders, law enforcement, mental health professionals, faith leaders, and social service providers. It is not intended for the general public.
Core Components: The training covers national best practices for postvention response, including: Coordinating a safe and supportive community response.
Strategies for reducing the risk of suicide contagion.
Best practices for communicating with the media and safe messaging.
Guidance on memorial activities.
Addressing the complexities of suicide-related grief.
Connecting affected individuals to resources like individual therapy or support groups.
Understanding the legal and ethical considerations after a suicide.
