What Is A Cannabis Strain And How Do You Verify Strain Identity And Quality Assurance For Cannabis Ingredients Used In NHPs, Edibles And Beverages, Topicals, And Cosmetics?

Cannabis strains are not defined scientifically, nor have they been characterized and classified using scientifically validated methods. This presents a challenge for distributors, manufactures and retailers who seek to develop a system for measuring quality assurance and control for consistent brands with Cannabis ingredients. The risk of brand damage is considerable if you do not know how to characterize your ingredient. One solution involves the use of Omic’s based molecular biotechnology that enables a standard operating protocol to verify product identity throughout the supply chain to ensure all stakeholders that products are authentic. Genomic and chemical barcodes provide retailers with criteria to measure reduced health risk while providing a chemical profile that is associated with strain traits. Consumers will be able to access evidenced-based tests that alleviate health safety concerns while providing confidence in the authentic, consistent brands they seek for a healthy lifestyle.

Life After The New Farm Bill

The CBD universe transformed when the United States President signed the 2018 Farm Bill into law. For the first time since 1937, industrial hemp was legal. Farmers across the nation rejoiced. The opportunity meant exiting the shadows of the black market and entering the light of regulation. Crop insurance offered newfound protection. Applications to cultivate hemp soared. Entrepreneurs became cultivators in the race to capitalize the new cash crop. But what about the fine print? One caveat to the 2018 Farm Bill is that states must regulate and license production of industrial hemp. Restrictions range from state-certified seeds to specialized testing equipment. Licensing fees are common, and not all states are onboard. Cultivating industrial hemp remains illegal in a handful of states. Producers and manufacturers must master this paradigm-shifting legislation if they are to thrive in the new market.

Terpenes: More Than Meets The Nose

Of the various compounds contained within the cannabis plant, cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.) are certainly the most recognizable, and their effects are well known. Terpenes, on the other hand, are also found within the cannabis plant and also offer a host of potential medical benefits. That being said, they are much less widely understood, and subsequently less appreciated as a potential therapeutic method. Learn more about the positive effects of terpenes, from mood enhancement to pain relief and even treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Get The 411 On Cannabinoid Pharmacology 101

Cannabinoids are wonderful compounds with one very big problem–they are lipophilic, or fat loving. This makes dosing very, very tricky. And why it’s so hard to measure cannabinoid levels in the blood and urine. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of cannabinoids are greatly affected by various factors, such as the amount and type of food eaten in a given day, whether other substances, including medications, were taken, and how they were consumed (vape, oil, edible, etc.). For these reasons and more, despite decades of research, the best advice to offer new users remains the “start low, go slow” method, which is as unscientific as it comes. And explains why this topic remains red hot in research.

Law & Order: Hemp / CBD Edition

Ignorantia juris non excusat — ignorance of the law excuses not. The Farm Bill of 2018 forever transformed the legal status of hemp and CBD. The new law removed hemp-derived CBD from the Controlled Substances Act. Farmers and entrepreneurs hailed the shift as the dawn of a new era. For the first time in almost a century, hemp was legal at the federal level. But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was quick to flex its own legal authority on the matter of CBD and cannabinoids. Individual states have mounted disputes at airports, restaurants, and shops. Never before has CBD law been so complex. This panel unravels and simplifies the current state of hemp and CBD under federal law, arming participants with the understanding to thrive in a brave new world.

CBD Safety: Possible Side Effects And Interactions

CBD continues to enjoy a long run of swelling fame. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to leave your house lately without running into a few stores that carry some form of this cannabinoid. But, as more and more people start using these products, issues surrounding safety keep popping up in the news. While some studies have exaggerated some of these concerns, there are a few considerations that patients and CBD users should take into consideration. A liver enzyme called cytochrome p450 breaks down CBD, as well as many other types of medications. So it’s important to discuss CBD use with your doctor to avoid or reduce risk of potential side effects caused by concomitant use.

Florida: State Of The CBD Address

The Coral Castle, The Skunk Ape, Scientology. These three things are shrouded in mystery, skepticism, and perhaps a little charlatanism. Unfortunately, all too many people react this way regarding the legalized cannabis and hemp industries. As state regulators scramble to enact a system of rules, rumor, gossip, and snake oil can manifest into mushrooming lives of their own, making reality appear as though covered with gossamer, a disservice to people who can thrive from cannabis-based therapeutics. Validity and legitimacy trod alongside of standardized regulations, and with each state in the US adopting varying practices, it's critical to know what's legal in your state of operation. Let's squash the rumors together, as our experts illuminate the laws specific to Florida.

CBN And Sleep

Tried of tossing and turning at night or having trouble getting to sleep at all? Many people have found great solace in sleepy time rituals that include cannabinoids. While a CBD has been implicated in inducing sweet sleep, another cannabinoid–CBN–may also help your head hit the pillow faster. Pre-clinical studies have shown that CBN may be a potent sedative with analgesic properties. Researchers believe it achieves this effect through the CB2 receptor–but we still have much more to learn.

Finance Your CBD Business

CBD is the next gold rush. News sources project a $20+ billion cannabinoid boom in the coming years. Start-up companies are blossoming like wild flowers after spring showers. Who makes it rain? Investors. Bridge loans, cash advances, and private loans are essential to the boom. Entrepreneurs must raise capital for their businesses, and millions of dollars are up for grabs. Nonetheless, financing CBD and cannabinoid companies is tricky. The lack of clear federal banking regulations and ambivalence from financial institutions has left some producers ‘high and dry.’ A few have resorted to falsifying applications or giving up entirely. Don’t let your entrepreneurial vision fall to the wayside. This board of financial and legal experts will help you navigate the choppy waters of raising capital for your CBD enterprise.

Commercial Chaos: Combating The Issue Of CBD In Big Box Stores

We consumers consume things. We literally assimilate products into our bodies. But did you ever wander around the grocery store wondering who tested this product? How do I know that the “organic” label isn’t a lie? And more importantly, how do I know that it’s safe to consume? Probably not — you’re not crazy, and we do tend to place trust in commercially sold products. After all, there are regulatory bodies that are looking out for our safety and well-being. With CBD products, however, less is known. In some states, thoughts regarding product safety can be vexing, since only the starting biomass is tested as regulatory bodies continue to agonize over THC levels. This needn’t be product witchery, however. The therapeutic properties CBD offers necessitate appropriate quality assurance, especially as these products find their way into mass retail stores, places where that unspoken trust between vendor and consumer are ubiquitous. What’s a consumer to do? Our panelists can help.

Mastering The Mystery Of CBD Dosing

Dosing is one of the most perplexing issues facing the CBD and cannabinoid industry. We all know the medical adage, start low and go slow. But what if a client/consumer uses CBD for a specific condition? Perhaps your CBD brand targets a certain demographic. Unique conditions require precise solutions. Companies that adopt a one-size-fits-all policy toward dosing are bound to disappoint their fan base. Cannabinoids may exhibit biphasic effects, meaning a low dose affects the consumer in an opposite way compared to a high dose. Administration route and product composition also affect dosing. Certain individuals may even be deficient in natural cannabinoids. This panel explores a range of common conditions and the CBD doses required to address them.

A Flood In The Market: How To Differentiate Your CBD Brand

With the spreading legalization of both medical and recreational cannabis across the US, more and more players are getting into cannabis. This creates a new level of competition driven by product differentiation. Like traditional industries that were never hindered by prohibition, cannabis companies are flexing their new-found independence by stepping up their branding and marketing efforts. This means investing heavily in custom relationship management to ensure people stay satisfied and remain loyal to the brand. But, until cannabis is federally legalized, brands cannot rely on all traditional tactics, such as television ads, to drive sales. Creativity is certainly necessary in this nascent industry.

The Next Big Thing In Cannabinoids

Have you heard “the skinny” on THCV? This cannabinoid has been implicated in weight loss. Yup, you heard that right. In contrast to the stereotype between cannabinoids and weight gain, recent studies have actually shown that people who consume cannabinoids are more likely to weigh less–and THCV might partially explain why. THCV can suppress appetite and help regulate blood sugar levels and therefore could even help people with diabetes. Research is underway looking at the effects of THCV on obesity and metabolic disorders. But it could just be the next big thing in cannabinoids.
