COURSE DESCRIPTION

It requires a team approach to develop a comprehensive treatment plan when a patient presents with complex dental problems and wishes to address all the needs. If the treatment involves several disciplines — endodontics, periodontics, orthodontics, surgical implant, and restorative — decisions must be made on the phasing and sequencing of treatment. In this module, Dr. Bob Winter discusses the when, why, and who in this process depends on how each patient presents and the preferences of the team members for each specific case. A systematic approach is outlined to assist clinicians in establishing a framework for this decision-making process.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

• Relate the sequence of steps used in the treatment planning process.
• Identify potential underlying conditions that may influence the development and finalization of the treatment plan.
• Establish what consultations are required with the various disciplines and how they should be sequenced.
• Determine how to optimally phase treatment to successfully complete the case.

About Dr. Devan Munk:

Dr. Munk completed his undergraduate studies at Utah State University before earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. His surgical training began at MetroHealth Medical Center, a leading Level 1 trauma center in Cleveland, Ohio. He then completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency through Georgetown University in Washington DC, where he trained at several prestigious institutions, including:

• MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the largest and busiest Level 1 trauma center in Washington, DC
• The Washington DC Veterans Affairs Medical Center
• Children's National Hospital, the only pediatric Level 1 trauma center in Washington, DC
• The National Institutes of Health

His training encompassed the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Throughout his residency, he was actively involved with the Resident Organization of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, advocating for patients and the specialty at the national level.
